One of the most important things someone with low back pain can do is work on their flexibility. Most people are not as active as they should be, this more sedintary life leads to stiff and tight lower backs. This is especially true if you are sitting in an office chair for the majority of your day.
Along with getting regular Chiropractic adjustments, it’s important to maintain your flexibility so that the adjustments hold for longer periods of time.
You need to make sure that this stretch is appropriate for your problem. Before performing you can visit me at Becker Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Omaha or Louisville Nebraska or your local Chiropractor and make sure that this stretch is right for you.
My favorite way to stretch a tight lower back is to have the person stand 2-3 feet away from a wall facing away from the wall. Now I have them sit against the wall while keeping their legs straight. Next I will have the patient lean forward at their waist. It is important to stretch as is you were trying to put your head in between your knees, not like you were trying to touch your toes. If you feel more of the stretch in your hamstrings (back of your legs) you can bend your knees until that goes away.
Hold the stretch for 10-15 seconds. The first couple times you perform the stretch make sure that you do it next to a table or chair so you can help get yourself up if it becomes painful. Streching should never hurt so don’t go so far that it’s painful.
